What is Spanish Playgroup?

What is Spanish Playgroup?

Spanish Playgroup isn't about flashcards or memorising words. It's an hour of songs, stories, movement and play — all led in Spanish — where children pick up the language the same way they picked up their first one: by living it.

Every week, children help Paco, our guide, solve a small problem — going on a picnic, exploring a forest, finding a rainbow. Along the way, Spanish becomes part of the fun, not a lesson layered on top of it.

✔ Small groups

✔ Stories and songs

✔ Parent joins in

✔ No previous Spanish needed

Meet Paco

The curious little duck behind every Spanish adventure.

Paco explores the world alongside the children, turning each session into a story filled with stories, songs and play.

Every week is a new adventure, but they're all connected. Children don't just attend sessions—they follow Paco's adventures throughout the year.

Every adventure starts here

Each week Paco opens his backpack to reveal a surprise linked to the day's adventure.

One week it might be a leaf from the forest. The next, a shell from the beach or a picnic basket ready for an adventure.

A small surprise that sparks curiosity and invites children to discover Spanish naturally, through play and imagination.

What a session looks like

What a session looks like

A warm welcome and a hello song

  • Paco appears with a mission for the day

  • Songs, movement and guided play

  • A story to wind down together

  • A goodbye ritual, and a little idea to keep the adventure going at home

Grown-ups take part too — no Spanish experience needed. You'll pick up simple phrases alongside your child.

Who's behind Spanish Playgroup?

Who's behind Spanish Playgroup?

I'm Alixe, a Spanish teacher based in Hebden Bridge (also behind Spanish Decoded, my course for adults).

I created Spanish Playgroup because I wanted local children to grow up with the same sense of curiosity and confidence around Spanish that I try to give my adult students — just built for little ones, through play, songs and stories instead of grammar.

FAQ

Does my child need to already understand some Spanish?

Not at all — most children start with none, and that's completely fine. Everything is designed to be understood through context, gesture and repetition.

What if my child doesn't want to join in?

That's completely normal, especially in the first few sessions. Watching and listening is still learning — there's no pressure to perform.

Can I bring a younger sibling?

Yes — younger siblings are very welcome to come along and be part of the session, at no extra cost. See our note on session safety for a little more detail.

What if we miss a session?

Let us know in advance where possible — see our *Terms & Conditions for our policy on missed sessions.

Do I need to speak Spanish myself?

No — you'll be learning alongside your child. Simple phrases and songs are easy to pick up, even with zero prior Spanish.

Can I transfer my ticket to someone else?

Yes — tickets are transferable. Our sessions are connected through an ongoing adventure with Paco, and there is a sense of progression throughout the programme, but each session is designed to be enjoyed on its own. If you’d like to transfer your ticket, please email us with the name of the new person attending. The new attendee will also need to fill in the registration form before attending.

FAQ

Do I need any previous Spanish?

No. Complete beginners and returners are equally welcome.

Will I have to speak in front of everyone?

No. There’s no pressure to perform. Speaking develops gradually and naturally.

Is there homework?

Light optional reflection, not drills or memorisation.

What if I miss a session?

You’ll receive a short summary so you can stay oriented.

Is this suitable if I’ve tried apps or courses before?

Yes — especially if those approaches didn’t feel right. Spanish Decoded focuses on understanding how the language works, rather than memorising phrases.

Will I be fluent after 8 weeks?

Fluency isn’t the goal. Understanding is. By the end of the course, Spanish feels structured and predictable, and you’ll know how to keep learning.
